Who should take NWE’s Camera Café workshop?

Northwest Exposure’s Camera Café workshops are open to all photographers, from beginners to passionate enthusiasts and advanced amateur who wish to improve their skills in a collaborative, hands-on workshop setting.

We offer technical and creative skill development through critique and discussion of photographs, in-studio instruction, in-the-field experience with professional guidance, and constructive feedback of  participants’ work.

A working knowledge of your camera’s functions is strongly recommended, though we will also provide instruction in how to use your camera, including its advanced features. Any camera, digital or film may be brought. Opportunities to have work critiqued during the workshop are limited to those with digital cameras. If you prefer to use film, arrangements can be made for viewing the work and receiving feedback at a later date, after the film is developed. We have digital cameras and lenses available for use at a very reasonable daily rate.

The number of workshop participants is kept small to maximize the individual learning experience and the instructor-student ratio.

Workshop Topics

* Defining your photographic goals

* Project-based photography as a development path

* Approaches to photographic subjects

* In-camera composition – vantage point, lens choice

* Working with available light

* Considerations in photographing people

* Close-up and macro photography of gardens — technical and aesthetic factors

* Camera settings for candid and quick photography

* Your Questions!

What to Bring

* A digital or film camera with which you’re familiar (make sure you have freshly charged batteries and a charger or a spare battery)

*  At least 4-16 GB of memory cards. If shooting film, call us and we can discuss which film will best meet your needs for the day.

* Comfortable walking shoes

* Optional: Sunscreen and / or hat. You may also wish to bring a laptop computer to download your images from your memory card.

* Lunch: you may bring a lunch with you or purchase one nearby at World Café or other establishment.

Additional Information

Whiteaker Neighborhood

The Whiteaker neighborhood is the oldest neighborhood in Eugene and is notable for its artists’ studios, great music, renowned coffee, an accommodating natural foods store, funky bars, and ethnic restaurants. A plethora of photographic subjects include friendly people, one of a kind yard art, creative gardens, community events, and historic architecture.

The KLCC Annual Garden Tour

Northwest Exposures Photography Workshops is collaborating with the 17th annual Garden Tour fundraiser for KLCC radio station. Featuring 10 gardens within walking distance of each other, we’ll attend the three closest to our studio, one of which is the garden of Mayor Kitty Piercy. Live music, food and community booths in addition to well tended gardens will meet a wide variety of photographic interests.

Workshop Instructors

Joshua Daniels

Joshua has been photographing for several decades as both an enthusiast and professional with diverse photographic interests. He has shot in many locations around the globe, including Australia, Japan, China, Mexico, and Latin America. He is currently a partner in Northwest Exposures Photography, which specializes in photography of families, children, special events such as weddings, b’nai mitzvahs, and the performing arts.

With more than ten years teaching English and literature at the university level, Joshua is also an experienced teacher and mentor. He enjoys working with students of all ages, aptitudes, and learning styles. His passion for photography helps inspire students, while his years of teaching experience provide a range of strategies and methods for helping learners reach their potential and find joy in photography.  Joshua will be presenting the workshop.

Judi Lamb

Judi came to photography through a strong interest and aptitude in graphic arts. She enjoys using elements of design in her photographic work, loves pushing her photographic limits and is continually seeking new approaches to common subject material. Even though for her professional work she uses solely digital equipment, she still regularly pursues personal projects with her medium format film camera.

Judi is currently a partner in Northwest Exposures Photography and serves as a photographer and director of marketing. With her understanding of photography and the challenges less experienced photographers encounter, she is able to bring encouragement and tips that will help growing photographers maintain the inspiration to move forward. Judi will be assisting Joshua with the workshop.
